Description
Building cultural competence starts when we examine our own cultures. By identifying how we see ourselves, we begin to understand how individuals served by prevention may self-identify with many cultures. In this course we will review the topics of stereotyping and health disparities as they apply to prevention through short scenarios, and learn what steps should be taken to increase one's own cultural proficiency.
Objectives
- Understand how knowledge of cultural diversity can lead to increased personal capacity to become successful in prevention efforts
- Work through both positive and challenging stereotypes to identify how personal biases may lead to stereotyping
- Use sample scenarios to recognize how opportunities to increase cultural proficiency may present themselves during prevention activities
